Qualifying Buyers

Real buyers and red flags

After fifteen years and hundreds of enquiries, the difference is audible in the first conversation. A real buyer asks about process. A fake one asks you to skip it. Here is what each sounds like.

A · The real buyer
“I would like to set a meeting to understand your process.”
“I am, and I represent, XXX — I will send the documentation after the meeting.”
“Let me prepare the LOI based on our meeting.”
“Is there flexibility on the process? I have a conflict I need to resolve.”
“When and how do I get to verify the product (POP)?”
“How can we proceed with the deal and protect everyone involved?”
“Here is our company registration and KYC — who do you need it from on our side?”
“The end user is X, discharge port is Y, and here is the annual volume.”
“Our bank is ready to issue the instrument once the SPA is agreed.”
B · The red flag
“I don’t have time to waste in meetings — let’s get the deal done.”
“I am the buyer. I have the money in the bank.”
“I want sugar at $400 and I want $20 commission.”
“I am the buyer, and this is what I want.”
“I need you to pay for my team’s travel expenses.” — buying millions of dollars in sugar, but cannot afford a trip.
“I don’t have time for documents. Send the POP first, on WhatsApp.”
“I can’t share company details — my buyer is confidential.”
“Destination doesn’t matter — I have buyers everywhere.”
“My investor will fund at closing — send the contract and I’ll get it signed.”
“In a hurry? Already have your own process set in stone? Then we are not the right partner for you. We are not interested in taking risks to make money — we are interested in doing this properly, and doing it again next month.”

Why we qualify this hard

Fraud lives at the LOI stage

Forged allocation letters, recycled proof-of-product and mills that do not exist. Document fraud costs this industry an estimated $1.2 billion a year, and most of it is caught — or missed — in the first week.

Refineries protect themselves

Customised photos and videos follow contract execution rather than precede it. Anyone offering the reverse is not working with a real mill.

The process is the protection

Verify the seller, verify the documents, and refuse deals that skip the process. That rule protects both sides equally.
